Care for God’s Creation

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

Through our work at Catholic Charities St. Augustine, we put our faith into action each and every day. We strive to live by the seven Catholic social teachings while connecting those in need with humble compassion. And as springtime blooms around us, we’re turning our focus to one social teaching in particular: Care for God’s Creation.

This social teaching explains that, as humans, we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation itself. We’re called to protect all of God’s Creation – His people and His planet – and to live our faith in relationship with all the world around us.

Care for God’s Creation is an environmental challenge with moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored. In the words of Pope Benedict XVI,

“The environment is God’s gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility towards the poor, towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole. . . Our duties towards the environment are linked to our duties towards the human person, considered in himself and in relation to others. It would be wrong to uphold one set of duties while trampling on the other.”

We are privileged to serve those in need amid the stunning setting of St. Augustine: the oldest city in the continental U.S., and a true testament to the timelessness of nature’s beauty. From its sparkling shorelines to its dense greenery and parks along the coast, one can easily see how the dedication to keeping God’s Creation beautiful, in turn, creates a pristine environment for His people to honor and praise him.

Caring for God’s creation can also take the form of minimizing wastefulness. Our organization works to redistribute everything from donated school uniforms to non-perishable food so that we can not only help those less fortunate than us, but also lessen our footprint on the earth.

As we reflect on what it means to honor the earth around us – and all those who dwell on it – we continue to connect our community with the resources they need. We are always looking for new volunteers as well as donations to help us in our mission. To learn more about what we do and how you can get involved, please visit ccbstaug.org/help-us/.
